Abu Dhabi Airports, the operator overseeing five commercial airports in the emirate, has announced the permanent appointment of Elena Sorlini as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Sorlini, who has been serving in an interim capacity since June 2023, now transitions into the role permanently.
During her tenure with Abu Dhabi Airports, Sorlini has overseen the successful opening of Abu Dhabi International Airport’s new state-of-the-art Terminal A. This terminal stands as one of the largest in the world, boasting a capacity to host 45 million passengers annually and accommodate 79 aircraft simultaneously. Such developments have significantly bolstered the aviation sector’s contribution to Abu Dhabi’s diversified economy.
Under Sorlini’s leadership, Abu Dhabi Airports has experienced steady growth in passenger traffic numbers, with continuous year-on-year increases. Additionally, her efforts have led to the attraction of new airlines and routes to Abu Dhabi, including the French national carrier Air France.
His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Advisor of Special Affairs at the Presidential Court and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Abu Dhabi Airports, expressed confidence in Sorlini’s capabilities, stating, “With her proven track record of success in the aviation sector, we have full confidence in her ability to lead the organisation through its next phase of growth.”
In response to her official appointment, Sorlini remarked, “I remain committed to unlocking the full growth potential of Abu Dhabi’s tourism and trade industry.” She emphasized Abu Dhabi’s rich offerings and reputation for excellence and innovation, positioning the airports as gateways to cultural heritage and commercial opportunities.
Bringing over 20 years of experience in the aviation industry, Sorlini has held various senior management positions, including Executive Director of Transport & Logistics at ADQ, Vice President of Group Corporate Strategy at Oman Aviation Group, and Strategy Director at Copenhagen Airports. Additionally, she has served as Vice President at Macquarie Airports and is a member of the board at Etihad Airways, Abu Dhabi Aviation, and ADQ Aviation and Aerospace Services.
