In a historic moment for Kuwait, eighty-three-year-old Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah has been officially named the Emir of Kuwait. Recognized as possibly the world’s oldest crown prince, Sheikh Mishal assumed key constitutional duties of the emir in 2021 and now takes on the role officially following the passing of Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah.

The announcement was made by the deputy prime minister and minister of state for cabinet affairs on Saturday, triggering condolences from Gulf countries. The UAE declared a three-day mourning period to pay respects to Sheikh Nawaf.

With a career primarily dedicated to Kuwait’s security and intelligence apparatus, Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah brings a wealth of experience to his role as Kuwait’s 17th ruler. Having served as deputy chief of the Kuwait National Guard from 2004 to 2020, he assumed the position of crown prince when Sheikh Nawaf ascended to power.

Sheikh Mishal played a pivotal role in Kuwait’s interior ministry, notably heading the department of general investigation from 1967 to 1980, where he earned credit for reinforcing its role as a state security service.

A father of twelve, Sheikh Mishal faces the task of naming a new crown prince within the next year. Speculation looms over whether he will choose an heir from a younger generation.

In 2016, Sheikh Mishal underwent a “successful operation” during travel abroad, although specific details of the treatment were not disclosed.

The ascension of Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah marks a significant chapter in Kuwait’s history, and the global community watches with interest as he takes on the responsibilities of leadership in a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.
