Zubair Tiwana

Malik Amjad Zubair Tiwana, a seasoned officer of the IRS, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Monday. Currently serving as a member operation of IRS, Mr. Tiwana’s appointment was approved by the federal cabinet through a circulation summary.

An official notification confirming Mr. Tiwana’s appointment is expected to be issued on Tuesday, formalizing his new role as the head of FBR.

The former FBR chairman, Mr. Asim Ahmad, was appointed by the previous PML-N-led coalition government on April 27 the previous year, and he officially retired from his position on July 30.

A number of officers were vying for the prestigious position from various sectors including IRS, Customs, and Pakistan Administration Services. However, according to an official source, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has given his approval for Mr. Tiwana’s appointment as the top executive of FBR.

The government has set an ambitious revenue collection target of Rs9.415 trillion for the current fiscal year, marking a substantial increase compared to the revised collection of Rs7.2 trillion in the previous fiscal year. This projection reflects a notable rise of Rs2.219 trillion, equivalent to a 30% increase in revenue collection.

Mr. Tiwana’s appointment comes at a critical juncture as the government endeavors to enhance revenue generation to support various developmental projects and initiatives. His extensive experience within the Inland Revenue Service is anticipated to play a pivotal role in the realization of these fiscal goals.
