Romina Khurshid Alam, the Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, has announced Pakistan’s plans to launch a dedicated Kisan TV channel aimed at supporting farmers in combating the impacts of climate change.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Prime Minister’s aide outlined that the innovative channel will focus on educating farmers about climate adaptation strategies, disaster management techniques, and sustainable practices to mitigate environmental degradation. The channel will utilize the services of Pakistan Television (PTV) to broadcast programs in six regional languages, ensuring that vulnerable communities receive timely and accessible information. These programs will be aired through local PTV stations at the provincial level, thereby maximizing and localizing coverage and reach.

Romina Khurshid Alam also disclosed engagements with a private channel to further amplify the Climate Ministry’s initiatives, promoting clean and green practices.

She emphasized the critical role of media in enhancing climate change coverage and reorienting journalism priorities. The Kisan TV channel will provide farmers with essential information and guidance on adapting to climate-related challenges, including weather alerts to facilitate preemptive measures.

The channel will also spotlight initiatives aimed at promoting women’s income generation, gender empowerment, and environmental sustainability. The government aims to empower farmers with the knowledge and tools necessary to build resilience against climate change, leveraging the power of media.

Media teams from relevant climate change departments and TV initiatives will collaborate to bolster efforts in protecting the socio-economic interests of the farming community. During meetings convened in June to address global heat waves and floods, the PM’s aide directed relevant institutions to enhance their media teams to ensure vulnerable communities remain informed about climate change in a timely manner.

This strategic move underscores Pakistan’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by climate change and supporting its agricultural sector through innovative and accessible media solutions.
