Lt Gen (retd) Muzammil Hussain resigns as Wapda chairman

After more than five years as chairman of the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), Lt. Gen. (ret.) Muzammil Hussain has resigned.

The then-prime minister Nawaz Sharif named the Wapda chief on August 24, 2016, for a term of five years. In 2021, the PTI administration extended his term for a further five years.

Muzammil Hussain told that he is resigning due to “some personal reasons” and that he will provide “details” following the acceptance of his resignation.

“I have resigned and submitted my resignation to Prime Minister Shehzad Sharif. “At this time, I am unable to discuss the specifics of my departure,” he said, adding that during his term he worked on several significant water-related projects and made Wapda self-sufficient.

It is crucial to note that during his visit to the Diamer-Bhasha Dam site last month, Prime Minister Shehbaz instructed the Wapda chief to secure the completion of this vital project in 2026, ahead of the 2029 deadline.

After a briefing on the construction of the Diamer dam, PM Shehbaz stated, “Nothing in this world is impossible therefore efforts to complete the Diamer-Bhasha dam project by 2026 instead of 2029 should be made.”
