Uber, the worldwide ride-hailing company that connects customers and drivers seamlessly, is beefing up its driver screening standards with the addition of new and better security checks for drivers, increasing the bar on safety in Pakistan.

This step was performed in collaboration with Careem to provide a more comprehensive and efficient background check for drivers in association with Global Credit Services, an external global partner (GCS). With the help of GCS, Uber will be able to expedite its safety checks, reduce driver duplication from other ride-hailing services, and expand the scope of background checks in Pakistan, with the help of local law enforcement authorities and publicly available national databases.

According to Shahid Khan, Uber Pakistan’s General Manager,

“Safety for all has consistently been a priority at Uber. There are thousands of passengers using Uber’s services for a safe, reliable, and convenient commute across multiple cities in Pakistan, and despite the challenges, we are doing everything we can to mitigate risks and enhance safety checks for our riders. In accordance with this, we intend to ensure that our safety protocols in Pakistan are in line with approved global safety standards. The new and improved background checks are more efficient and thorough, and ensure that working together with other ride-hailing providers like Careem enables us to create best practices across the industry.”

These background checks are in addition to Uber’s in-app safety features, which include facial recognition for COVID safety measures, a safety toolkit, an emergency button that connects a rider to the appropriate authorities, real-time trip sharing, and more.

Uber has played a critical role in establishing industry best practices, including new safety features and refining policies and procedures based on country and region, for numerous years. Uber collaborated with industry experts and stakeholders to identify areas for improvement and to take proactive steps to solve them. Uber is dedicated to providing safe and dependable mobility options to its riders in the communities where it operates.
