SMEDA initiatives can create new jobs, says Governor

Governor Sindh Imran Ismail stated that the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority’s (SMEDA) initiatives to develop Pakistan’s e-commerce sector can result in the creation of numerous new jobs and a significant opportunity for export promotion via global e-commerce platforms such as Amazon.

He was speaking during the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SMEDA and a leading e-commerce startup, “The Extreme Commerce,” held at Governor House Sindh on Friday. Governor Sindh praised the Pakistani government on the effort and commended the Ministry of Industries and Production for directing special attention through SMEDA toward allowing local SMEs to maximise their benefits from Amazon’s worldwide trade potential. He stated that SMEDA intended to take particular measures to foster the growth of e-commerce as a full-fledged sector. SMEDA CEO Hashim Raza announced on this occasion that SMEDA would start a sustainable initiative to increase SMEs’ access to global markets via Amazon and other prominent platforms. He stated that we will bring all key enterprises supporting E-Commerce into the loop in order to assist Pakistani SMEs to get the most benefits from the government of Pakistan’s official arrangement with Amazon.

The first memorandum of understanding, signed with “Extreme Commerce,” is focused on the development of skills and capacity building for SMEs in the area of e-commerce, he noted. Mr Sunny Ali, CEO of Extreme Commerce, stated in his talk that the MOU with SMEDA would enable SMEs to begin selling their products and services on Amazon and other comparable platforms.

Both organisations will collaborate to provide SMEs with the essential knowledge and training to help them digitise their businesses and reach out to more clients in global marketplaces without incurring large trip expenses. Later, CEO SMEDA Hashim Raza and CEO Extreme Commerce signed the MOU’s document and wished for its effective execution in accordance with the parties’ mutual goals and objectives. Both organisations will conduct a series of online and offline awareness sessions for SMEs on the benefits of e-commerce as part of the MoU. Similarly, skills development programmes will be created to address the scarcity of trained labour required for e-commerce. In this regard, all colleges in the country are being urged to encourage and support students and recent graduates who wish to launch an e-commerce firm.
